Chapter Fifteen

“That is... a one-day drive at least,” Jenna said.

They were in the living room. Baruk had made the fire, as usual, and they were sitting in front of the fireplace, on the floor, Jenna secured in his arms. She was warm and content, and if she closed her eyes, she could pretend for a minute that it was all perfect. She could pretend that she had everything she ever wanted, and that her life was going to be easy from now on. But when she opened her eyes and stared into the flames, they talked of how unpredictable the future was, and of how little control she had over it.

“Please don’t leave me alone here.”

Baruk leaned in and kissed the top of her head. Before he spoke, he took a moment to inhale her scent. She smelled like fresh water and that liquid soap of hers she used on everything, including clothes. The whole house was starting to smell of her beauty products, and he found that he didn’t mind it at all.

“I’m not leaving you alone. I’ll take Han with me, and a few grunts. Lars will stay behind to keep an eye on the village while I’m gone and make sure that you and the kids are safe. You’ll have plenty of grunts to protect you. And Norsko, too, to make you comfort food.”

Comfort food. She was surprised Baruk knew the term. Then again, Jenna had to remember that she wasn’t his first human bride. He’d probably learned all he knew about humans from Carice.

“Tell me about what really happened,” she said after taking a silent minute to gather her courage. “What happened to Carice? How was it an accident?”

“It wasn’t. I don’t believe that.”

“Then... how?”

The captain sighed. Jenna knew it wasn’t easy for him to talk about his late bride, but she wasn’t going to back down now. She wanted to know.

“Harum wanted Carice for himself. We both saw her at the institute for tributes, the same institute where I found you. It was hard for me to come the day I met you. But I told myself I was only looking for a nanny, and I pushed myself to do it. Krul and Kore needed a female to look after them, and in absence of female orcs, a human female was the best option. I picked you just a month ago. I picked Carice two years ago, maybe more, and I thought she was the one.”

He fell silent, and Jenna didn’t know how to react. His arms were around her, holding her gently, and as she leaned with her back against his chest, she could feel his heart beating steadily. She knew he was thinking about her. There was nothing wrong with that. It was natural.

“Han told me Harum saw her first,” she nudged him to go on.

Baruk huffed. “That’s what he likes to think. Maybe he did, what do I know? It doesn’t make any difference. I was the one who approached her, even if he might’ve seen her before I did.
